The School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, founded in 1953, is one of the earliest backbone colleges of Qingdao University of Technology. For more than 60 years, the college has always persisted in taking discipline construction as the top priority, teaching and scientific research as the center, undergraduate education as the main body, and developing master’s and doctoral education actively. The school has 9 undergraduate majors, including mechanical design and manufacturing and its automation, material forming and control engineering, measurement and control technology and instruments, intelligent manufacturing engineering, vehicle engineering, automotive service engineering, transportation, traffic engineering and safety engineering. The school has one doctoral program in the first-tier discipline of mechanical engineering, one postdoctoral research station in mechanical engineering, four first-tier discipline master’s degree in mechanical engineering, material science and engineering, transportation engineering and safety science and engineering, two professional degree master’s degree in mechanical engineering and transportation. Mechanical engineering is a high-level discipline in Shandong Province, mechanical design, manufacturing and automation is a national first-class specialty and excellent engineer training program, and vehicle engineering is a national first-class specialty. The school also has Shandong Mechanical Engineering Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center and Shandong Mechanical Engineering Training Center. It has formed a complete multi-level talent training system, such as bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, doctor’s degree, post-doctorate and so on. At present, the School has more than 4000 undergraduate students and more than 600 doctoral and master’s degree students.
The school now has 232 faculties, including 36 professors, 66 associate professors, 8 senior experimenters, 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, 1 academician of the Institute of Technology of the Royal Society, 1 specially appointed professor of the Yangtze River Scholars of the Ministry of Education, 6 specially appointed experts of Taishan scholars of Shandong Province, 18 doctoral supervisors and 89 master’s degree supervisors. There are 3 people who enjoy the special allowance of the State Council, 2 outstanding talents of the Ministry of Education in the new century, 3 top professional and technical talents at the provincial and municipal level, and 3 famous teachers in Shandong Province. After years of talent building, a team of capable teachers with reasonable age, reasonable knowledge and discipline structure, high ideological quality and deep academic attainments has been formed, which provides a strong guarantee for the development of discipline construction, teaching, scientific research and other work of the school.

Four national engineering practice education centers: National Engineering Practice Education Center for Special Vehicle Design and Manufacture, Engineering Practice Education Center for Qingdao University of Technology-Qingdao Sifang vehicle Research Institute Co., Ltd., Engineering practice Education Center of Qingdao University of Technology-South Railway Qingdao Sifang Locomotive and Rolling Stock Co., Ltd., Qingdao University of Technology-Qingte Group National Engineering Practice Education Center for Special Vehicle Design and Manufacture. Five municipal scientific research platforms: Key Laboratory of Mechanical Design and Manufacturing Technology of Qingdao, 3D Printing Engineering Research Center of Qingdao, Key Disciplines of Mechanical Engineering (cultivation) jointly built by Municipal Schools, Key Laboratory of Qingdao New Energy and Energy Saving Technology, Research Center of Qingdao Energy and Environmental Equipment Engineering Technology; one school-level key discipline: Key Discipline of Transportation Engineering. The school has CNC machining center, CNC lathe, CNC milling machine, three-coordinate measuring machine, rapid prototyping machine, scanning electron microscope, casting surface roughness tester, abrasive wear testing machine, multi-function fusion welding machine, electric spark cutting machine, internal combustion engine testing equipment, motor vehicle performance testing equipment (instruments), automobile pneumatic braking test bench, X-ray energy spectrometer, surface topography meter, fatigue testing machine and other advanced instruments and equipment. The total value of the all the equipment is more than 80 million yuan. A relatively perfect discipline and experimental platform for personnel training, scientific research and social service has been built.
The school adheres to the guidance of national demand and serving economic and social development, and actively carries out scientific research. In the past 5 years, nearly 400 academic papers such as SCI and EI have been published, 40 academic monographs have been published, 250 invention patents have been approved, and nearly 140 projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Science and Technology Support Plan and other provincial and ministerial-level scientific research projects have been undertaken, with a total expenditure of nearly 46 million yuan. Faculties from our school have won a second prize for National Scientific and Technological Progress, a major Energy-saving Achievement Award of Shandong Province, a first prize of Shandong Technological Invention Award, a second prize of Technological Invention (science and technology), a second prize of Natural Science, 4 second prizes of Shandong Technological Invention Award, two first prizes of Science and Technology Awards of Colleges and Universities in Shandong Province. At present, extensive academic exchanges and industry-university-research cooperation with universities and academic institutions has been established in the United States, Germany, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong and other countries and regions, as well as large enterprises such as CRRC, Weichai Power, Shandong Himile Group Co.,Ltd and Qingdao Special Steel Co., Ltd.
Teaching quality is always put in the first place in our school, the cultivation of applied and innovative talents are taken as the important task, and building a high-level first-class specialty is the aim. The connotation development of teachers is paid attention, teaching concepts are constantly updated, teaching means and methods are reformed, and teaching management is strengthened. Meanwhile, the cultivation of students’ ability is also paid attention, advanced teaching mode and deepen the cooperation between schools and enterprises are adopted, and students’ engineering innovation and practical ability are cultivated with the help of enterprise resources. Our school has 2 excellent teachers of Baogang, 3 famous teachers in Shandong Province, 2 famous teachers in Qingdao and 3 provincial teaching teams. Faculties from our school have won 1 first prize, 1 second prize, and 3 third prizes. Our school also has 8 teaching reform projects in Shandong province, 14 high-quality courses in Shandong province, 20 textbooks have been published, 5 teaching materials have been won prizes, 50 teaching and research papers are published, 1 silver doctoral thesis was awarded in recent years. At the same time, we also have 4 excellent doctoral dissertations in Shandong province, 18 excellent master’s degree thesis in Shandong province, and there are 4 first prizes and 7 second prizes for excellent achievements of postgraduates in Shandong Province. In terms of innovation competitions for college students, 57 national competitions, including the Challenge Cup, and more than 300 provincial and ministerial science and technology competitions were awarded. Graduates are welcomed by the society and employers.
